Zen Cart Disable The Shipping Estimator In The Shopping Cart

Zen Cart natively comes with a lot of cool and useful functionalities enabled. This is one of the things that makes it such a powerful and customizable ecommerce platform. Sometimes, however, these native functionalities can clutter up the layout of a page in your zen cart. If you look at my website, any of my zen cart custom designs, or pre-made templates, then you will see that I favor simple, clean, easy to navigate designs, especially for ecommerce businesses. Aside from being more visually appealing, these kinds of designs can also increase customer conversion rates. Busier, more cluttered designs can confuse visitors to your website, and distract them from your products. In this zen cart tutorial, we will teach you how to turn off one of the less essential features that zen cart provides, in order to offer your customers a cleaner, easier to use design. The feature we will be discussing is the shipping estimator.

The Zen Cart shipping estimator is located in the shopping cart area of your website. In general, this is a useful tool which allows users to view their shipping cost before checkout. With a clean layout in mind, however, it can be done away with quite easily, and this simple change can have a significant, positive impact on the customer’s overall impression of your zen cart store. And we all know how important impressions are to a customer’s confidence in any business they are thinking of buying from, especially online.

To turn the shipping estimator off, log in to your Zen Cart Admin area, and navigate to Configuration –> Shipping/Packaging. Find the field labeled ‘Shipping Estimator Display Settings for Shopping Cart’. Select this field, and simple select ‘Off’. Save your modifications, and go see the change on the front end of your website!

Zen Cart Easy Way to Add a Flat Handling Fee to All Orders

You have a zen cart store and want to add a flat handling fee to all orders. You want the handling fee to display as part of the order sub-total display on the shopping cart page and elsewhere. This Easy Help Zen Cart Tutorial will show you an easy way with just one small edit to a php file to use zen cart native functionality to do this.

1. Log into your zen cart admin and go to Modules – Order Total – Low Order Fee. Set “Allow Low Order Fee” to “true”, “Order Fee For Orders Under” to “$your dollar amount”, and “Order Fee” to “your order fee”.

2. In your favorite plain text editor open the includes/languages/your language/modules/order_total/ot_loworderfee.php file. Be sure to back this file up and make a note that you have modified it for future upgrades as it is a zen cart core file.

Change this:

define('MODULE_ORDER_TOTAL_LOWORDERFEE_TITLE', 'Low Order Fee');
define('MODULE_ORDER_TOTAL_LOWORDERFEE_DESCRIPTION', 'Low Order Fee');

to this:

define('MODULE_ORDER_TOTAL_LOWORDERFEE_TITLE', 'Handling Fee');

Zen Cart How to Show a Specific Category if the Shopping Cart is Empty.

Optimizing what displays on the various pages in your zen cart is a good idea and can increase your sales. The empty shopping cart page can be set from the admin to show the new , featured, or specials centerbox. Another way to customize this page would be to shoe products from a specific category. This Easy Help Zen Cart Tutorial will show you how to add custom php code to your zen cart files to shoe a specific category on the empty shopping cart page.

On your favorite plain text editor open the includes/templates/your_template/tpl_shopping_cart_default.php. If there is not already an override for this file, create one by copying the includes/templates/template_default/tpl_shopping_cart_default.php to includes/templates/your_templates_dir/tpl_shopping_cart_default.php.

Find this:

<?php
$show_display_shopping_cart_empty = $db->Execute(SQL_SHOW_SHOPPING_CART_EMPTY);

Add this immediately after:

// bof: force category 3 on empty cart
$new_products_category_id = 3;
$cPath = '3';
// eof: force category on empty cart

So you now have:

<?php
$show_display_shopping_cart_empty = $db->Execute(SQL_SHOW_SHOPPING_CART_EMPTY);

// bof: force category 3 on empty cart
$new_products_category_id = 3;
$cPath = '3';
// eof: force category on empty cart

while (!$show_display_shopping_cart_empty->EOF) {
?>

Now you will see the products listed from category 3 (you can replace this number with your desired category id number) on the empty shopping cart page.

Turn Off Display Cart After Adding a Zen Cart Product

Streamline your customers shopping experience by turning off the display of the shopping cart after a product is added. Instead a message will appear that says “Successfully added Product to the cart …”. Making your customers shopping experience optimal is essential to good customer conversion. Sometimes it can be tedious for a customers to be taken to the shopping cart page after they add an item to cart, especially if they are adding a high number of products. This step by step tutorial will show you how to change this native zen cart behaviour which takes a customers to the shopping cart page after each click of the add to cart button.

Please note that I do not recommend customizing your zen cart in this way unless you have a very clear route to checkout on your site, preferably a “go to checkout” button in a very visible place in the header of your site. If you do not have this very visible “go to checkout” button or link, your customers could be confused and not be able to find their way to the checkout page.
