Be warned that many times the HTML area editor will insert “junk” code that while not visible to the naked eye is there and visible by search engines. “Clean” code is a must for SEO. Also, if you set the default editor to “HTML area” and have a slideshow or other custom coding on the main page, be sure to select “plain text” from the text editor drop down menu if you edit this page via the admin define pages editor. If you edit the page with the html area it will insert code that will break your slide show or other custom coding.

Rename Your Admin Folder

One of the most important things you can do to protect your site from hackers is to rename your zen cart admin folder. This should be done as soon as possible after after installation. This way, it will be significantly harder for hackers to find your admin area or attempt any attack on breaking into it.

1. Decide what you will name your new admin. Like any important password it should contain a combination of numbers letters (upper and lower case) and a symbol or two. It should not be anything common, or something that can be guessed. This is a very easy to use random password generator that is great for making secure admin folder names.

2. Back up your site files. See this step by step tutorial if you don’t know how to do this.

3. Open your admin/includes/configure.php, using your favorite plain text editor. If your host offers file manager via your cpanel, use the code editor. Change all instances of admin to your chosen new admin folder-name. Make sure you leave all the / intact.

There are 3 edits you will need to make. For the first 2, find:

and change the occurrences of ‘/admin/’ to your new admin name.

For the third edit find:

and change the ‘/admin/’ to your new admin name.

Save your changes.

***This is a php file and MUST be edited in a plain text editor. If you try to edit this file in any type of wysiwyg editor, the code will be corrupted and when you insert the file back into your zen cart it will break your entire site.***

4. Rename your admin folder using your host’s file manager. Just click on the admin folder, then click on “rename folder” and type in the new folder name.

4a. Rename your admin folder using Filezilla. Connect to your host and navigate to your stores root. Right click on your admin folder and select “Rename” and type in the new name.
