Zen Cart How To Offer Redeemable Coupons – Part Two

This Zen Cart tutorial is the final installment in a two part instructional series that tells zen cart users how to create and manage redeemable coupons. In this segment, we will talk about setting up coupon restrictions so that, for example, the coupon applies to only to certain products or categories. This is a very useful feature that zen cart provides natively, which means that you don’t need to install any modules/addons/plugins or the like in order to attain this functionality.

To do this, click the restrictions button to set them up. When using Coupon restrictions in zen cart, it’s usually best to start with the setting for the Categories of ‘top deny’. This makes it so that the Discount Coupon will not work with any product or category in your store. Next, you will need to add the categories the coupon is applicable to, if there are any. You may only need to add individual products. Filling out these specifications will the use of the Discount Coupon.

Your customers can view these restrictions using the discount coupons link in the information sidebox. This is also where the customer can enter the discount coupon redemption code to view any limits placed on the coupon. When a customer adds an item to their cart and proceeds to checkout, they will be presented with a field in which to enter a coupon code on the Payments page. After they imput in the code, and press Enter, your system will check to make sure it’s valid. If it is, and the item/s in their cart have not been restricted, then a Success message will appear on their screen. Their order total will then be appropriately adjusted automatically.

Zen Cart How To Offer Redeemable Coupons – Part One

This Zen Cart tutorial will teach you how to create redeemable coupons, and offer them to your customers. Redeemable coupons are one of the easiest and best ways to encourage customers to shop on your site, and there is a variety of highly effective ways they can be presented, like in a weekly newletter.

The first thing you need to do in order to create and offer these coupons is to enable zen cart’s coupon system. To do this, all you need to do is open your zen cart admin, and navigate to Modules->Order Total->Discount Coupons (ot_coupon). If it has not been installed already, click Install to enable it.

Next, in your Admin, find the menu item named ‘Gift Certificates/Coupons’. Click on the Coupon Admin option.

Then, create a coupon by clicking ‘Insert'(Or ‘Edit’ to edit an existing coupon). Fill in all the required details. If the coupon allows the customers access to a percentage discount, just put a percent(%) sign after the number representing the discounted amount. If the coupon is for free shipping only, check the free shipping box. This makes it so that the system ignores all the % or amount discounts, and only lets the coupon apply to shipping. It should be noted that entering a coupon code is optional. If you leave this field blank, the system will generate a random code for you. When you are finsihed, save the coupon.

At this point, you can either manually give the coupon code to your customers in advertisements(in print or on your website), or you can click the Email button and send it to a list of customers. You can also get creative with it, and use it as an incentive for your customers to sign up for a daily, weekly, or monthly newsletter.

Zen Cart Only Show Gift Certificate Option on Payments Page if Customer has a Gift Certificate

Your zen cart payments page should be as simple as possible to avoid customers bouncing from the page and not completing their orders. By default, the gift certificate redeem box shows on the payments page during checkout whether a customer has a gift certificate balance or not. This can be confusing to customers, and makes the checkout process more complicated than it needs to be. This Easy Help Zen Cart Tutorial will show you how to only show the gift certificate redeem box on the payments page if a customer has a gift certificate balance. If a customer has a 0 gift certificate balance, the gift certificate redeem box will not show.

In your favorite plain text editor open the includes/modules/order_total/ot_gv.php file. Be sure to back this file up and make a note that you have edited this file for future upgrades since it is a core file.

Find this code:

      $selection = array('id' => $this->code,
                         'module' => $this->title,
                         'redeem_instructions' => MODULE_ORDER_TOTAL_GV_REDEEM_INSTRUCTIONS,
                         'checkbox' => $this->use_credit_amount(),
                         'fields' => array(array('title' => MODULE_ORDER_TOTAL_GV_TEXT_ENTER_CODE,
                         'field' => zen_draw_input_field('gv_redeem_code', '', 'id="disc-'.$this->code.'" onkeyup="submitFunction(0,0)"'),
                         'tag' => 'disc-'.$this->code
                         )));

And change it to this:

if ($this->user_has_gv_account($_SESSION['customer_id']) > 0) {
      $selection = array('id' => $this->code,
                         'module' => $this->title,
                         'redeem_instructions' => MODULE_ORDER_TOTAL_GV_REDEEM_INSTRUCTIONS,
                         'checkbox' => $this->use_credit_amount(),
                         'fields' => array(array(
                         'tag' => 'disc-'.$this->code
                         )));
}

Save the file and upload it to your server making sure that you overwrite the file already on your server. Navigate to your checkout payments page and refresh your browser. The gift certificates redeem box should only show if the customer has a gift certificate balance greater than $0.00.

Answer: Yes. A customer can enter as many Gift Certificates as they want on the checkout payment page (step 2 of the checkout process) or gift-certificate redemption page, and then apply what ever portion of their Gift Certificate Balance to the order that they like.

When a customer adds something to their cart and proceeds to checkout, they will see a spot to enter a coupon code on the Payments page.

Once they fill in the code and press “Enter”, it will be checked for validity, and if it is valid and not restricted against what’s in their cart, a Success message will show on the screen, and their order Total will be adjusted appropriately
